The library car park is next. This car park is derelict, the lifts only serve the ground and 2nd floors (where the hotel is). These are Bennie lifts and have been refurbished only for DDA regulations, they still have the original doors with the small window in them! The original COP is still there and the unused floor buttons have stuck from lack of use!
I cannot see this car park has much future and suspect it will be knocked down soon.

At the end of the video you can see the now closed off ramp that links the library car park to the main car park. On another day I might have gone across it, but I wanted to get home today!!

That's about it really, the bus station car park shown crossed out in red was demolished in 2008. That used to have a single Kone lift at either end, with light bulb floor indicators which were almost identical to the buttons in the Bennie lifts in this video (the original ones).

  • I wonder why it is derelict.

  • Just looking at Bristol. If you have Google Earth, type in these:

    "burton ct, bristol"

    "all saints street, bristol"

    "lower castle street"

All have old looking car parks, difficult to know just how old this aerial shot is, but looks like this could be my next destination! Just need go be going near it during my working day!

If you see anything simular then email me (south England only - Birmingham, downwards!)

  • I believe the road goes up there somehow, couldn't see it from google earth though. So these lifts are only for street level > car park passengers.

  • Thanks for explaining. Can you also use the stairwell to get up to the hotel? Or is there anothe form of access to it without going into this car park?

  • I didn't look, but as the car park is closed off (inc other stairwell) and the car ramp on the roof is closed off, I would suspect the stairwell will have a locked gate. The car park is derelict so the lifts are only used to get up to the hotel.

  • Thanks for your comments. Google earth is a brilliant way of checking out town centres. All depends where I am working, No immediate plans though, unless there is somewhere nearby that I think would be good to visit. I want to check out an old car park in slough that I remember from far back, probably that next.

  • Out of interest, alothough you can't take the lifts to the top of that first car park, can you go beyond the second floor by the stairs?

  • It'd be great if you could go to some more locations. I really like your videos.

On the subject of Basingstoke, do you know what lifts are in the car park at the Anvil Theatre? I went in that car park back in 1998 so maybe they've changed.
