Petraeus: 'Afghan War Will Get Harder'

A top-ranking American warned Congress that the military situation in Afghanistan likely will "get harder before it gets easier." Yet Gen. David Petraeus says it is in no worse condition now than Iraq was when he arrived there to take command. (Dec. 9)

A very wise observation. You've hit the nail on the head as far as American social upbringing goes. It is in some ways truly messed up. We Americans are, in terms of cultural maturity, not much removed from the hordes that swept away Rome. As such our culture is deeply committed to moral absolutism and with that goes a level of bellicosity that shocks the rest of the world. In many ways we behave like a nation sized teenager.

we are all conditioned in different ways, so we are all sheep in our own way, but american conditioning is a special kind (we're number one, one nation under god, and so on), over generations it can do a lot of damage to a culture, and an individual

When the Russians invaded Afgan in the 80's they calculated they would need 600,000 troops just to secure the Afgan / Pakastan boarder...

Other then that, it's such a fictionalized mess over there and there really isn't any way to "win".
