UC Berkeley Protest

On Thursday, Nov 19, 2009 UC Regents voted to raise tuition 32% at all CA public colleges. The following day, Friday Nov 20, 40 undergrad and grad Berkeley students occupied part of the 2nd floor in Wheeler Hall as an act of protest while roughly one thousand students surrounded the building for over 11 hours. Administration sent police from Alameda County, the UC and other areas to suppress the uprising. Meanwhile roughly 70 students at UC Santa Cruz were engaged in an occupation as did students at UCLA the day prior, UC Davis and other schools as well. Here you will see excessive police presence and force as well as excessive spirit, purpose, courage and community on behalf of the students. Ultimately the 40 occupiers did not get their demands met and were charged misdemeanors. 3 activists were arrested and charged felonies before securing themselves inside w their peers that morning. One professor was arrested and a number of students were injured from the police. At least two had to have surgery. The following morning one of the occupiers was arrested while walking to school. UC President Yudoff, Chancellor Birgeneau remain behind closed doors.
