Doris Kearns Goodwin looks at the way a leader's private life affects his public actions at the 5th Annual Abraham Lincoln Institute Symposium. Ms. Goodwin analyzes the private life of Abraham Lincoln and three other contenders for the presidency in 1860: Salmon Chase, William Seward, and Edward Bates. The event was held at The Library of Congress. Following her remarks, Ms. Goodwin took questions from the audience.

Doris, why didn't you write "Johnson's Vietnamese Idiocy" instead of "Team of Rivals" for our President Obama?

Team of Rivals was a damn good read. I've since gone on to gather three Lincoln books by David Herber Donald, Carl Sandburg and Stephen B Oates. As well as Mrs Goodwin's other books on FDR and LBJ. She's a good writer.

Amazing book, I am reading it for the second time and continue to glean new insight into the lives of these amazing men and into the period from which they sprang. Long book? Yes, but an easy read that is addictive and very enjoyable. I also cried as a grown man at the end of this book.
