Kiri Te Kanawa sings "It Never Was You"
with Andre Previn, Mundell Lowe & Ray Brown, on piano, guitar and bass.

∞∞∞
I've been running through rains
And the wind that follows after
For one certain face
And an unforgotten laughter
I've been following signs
I've been searching through the lands
For a certain pair of arms
And a certain pair of hands
Yes, I've looked everywhere
You can look without wings
And I found a great variety
of interesting things.
But it never was you
It never was any way you
An occasional sunset reminded me
Or a flower hanging high on a tulip tree
Or one red star hung low in the west
Or a heart-break call from the Meadowlark's nest
Made me think for a moment
Maybe its true
I found there in the star
In the call, in the blue
But it never was you
It never was any way you
Anywhere, anywhere you

  • Her diversity is a golden gift, I'm glad I could see her perform before she retired, she's truly one of the most talented and diverse singers of our generation.

  • @akanippy I choked up when I first heard it.

  • @Amethyst888 sorry no offense was indended ,i love her voice and this song ,just thought she deserved better wardrobe

  • @Amethyst888 just love you ,

  • Gracias por el video!

  • I suspect that all those touched by this lovely song may have memories of someone from their past.

Dame Kiri is wonderful but lets not forget Sir Andre at the piano ,lovely playing only slightly marred by the sound quality of this clip.

He is equally as eloquent in his accompaniment of Julie Andrews in concert also on Youtube. Another fine performance by singer & pianist.

  • I love her, but this will always be Judy Garland's swan song....nothing compares to Judy's version.

  • @steelearch She has started as a Jazz singer and then she turn at opera.

  • @Argentino246 How can the original be Lotte Lenya if the song was written for a male character?

  • OH MY GOD!!!! Normally operatic voices tend to be stiff and cold when attempting popular music - but this was PHENOMENAL!! Her reading is warm, sad and sweet like few I've ever heard! Bravo, Dame Kiri!!

  • You don't get chills? Wow, I thought it was amazing. Very heart felt and also nose felt.

  • i don't feel a chill, either. i feel the heat of agonizing beauty. the impromptu feeling of this studio take, kiri's rubbing of her nose, her own disdainful reaction in parts all impart an aura of raw and natural feeling. nothing posed, everything felt and the piano is splendid. rave on
