Macho Again was second in the Preakness, won the Stephan Foster, second in the Whitney, and second in this race. That is not a 50,000 claimer. Was he consistent, no, but when he was on he was a grade one horse. Bullsbay proved he was a Saratoga lover. Asiatic Boy had been in the super in most of the major eastern grade ones that year.

i love RA but she beat a bunch of 50,000 claimers in this race

@sbstorm11 You're right..He beat the shit out of her in this one.I'm glad shes retired so she dont have to get her ass beat like that anymore.
-
@viking1938 Ya see, but it WASN'T another 1/8 mile. She won in the alloted amount of running room. Macho Again was second. End of story. So many people do the "but if" crap. No, it was a certain distance and she was the first one across the finish line. Pretty cut and dry if you ask me.

Another 1/8 of a mile & she's toast. Macho Again would have passed her going away. Borel probably needed a new stick after that ride, as he wore out the one he had. It hurt to watch that finish, as I felt for the poor filly. She gave it all that was in her.

Amazing finish! Calvin Borell rode a perfect race on a legendary horse; I've seen him take horses from last place to first (Kentucky Derby) but I think this was his, and Rachel's, geatest acheivement!

Agreed.
Rachel Alexandra won this race as a true champion. She was on the outside, made to be in the front the whole time so she would be exhausted at the end. As said, "there was no free ride for Rachel." The horse that almost won was not being challenged and rested for most of the race. Of course he came up fast.
When she stretched her front legs out at the end you saw one of the greatest horses of all time. She wasn't going to let any guy beat her.
Ruffian would have been proud. Mary Ellen
