U.S. infantry forces when not getting blown up by land mines in wheeled trucks on roads or foot-slogging are out-gunned on the non-linear battlefield (NLB) where millions of Russian-made Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPGs) proliferate

...because they are minimalist in their approach to save weight and cost. The RPG's firing motor/booster charge is in a narrow launcher stem and the warhead itself sticks out on the end and isn't covered by a heavy metal tube, saving weight--idea copied from the German Panzerfaust of WW2. American infantry obsessed with kinetic energy bullet gunslinging ignores having high explosives weapon shock action at the squad-level making excuses that disposable M136 "AT4" (84mm) single-shot rockets that are 14-pounds and 30 inches long throwaway fiberglass tubes--with no firing grips and sights that have to be popped open, operated ad hoc without dedicated gunners is going to somehow counter the enemy's dozens of dedicated gunners with RPGs that they can run into and out of firing position with firing grips and sights ready

Anyone who has read the book or watched the movie, "Blackhawk Down!" knows that our disposible rocket mentality doesn't cut it against the ready-to-fire RPG that is operated in large numbers by our enemies.
U.S. Army Rangers shoot a family of 84mm rocket types in the excellent (Brits almost sank an Argentine warship in the Falklands war with one) but heavy Carl Gustav RR re-usable launcher with ready-to-fire firing grips using a dedicated gunner (M3 RAAWS)
http://www.combatreform.com/carlgustav.htm
and USMC has dedicated SMAW gunners that shoot 83mm rockets which has a disposible single-shot version for any Soldier to fire called SMAW-D which at least compacts its launcher tube like the 5-pound M72 LAAW introduced in Vietnam that is weak in blast effects. Since our Western military rocket launchers cover the entire rocket, their overall weight is heavier and cost more than the minimalist RPG.
What we need to do wake-up to the facts that high explosives weaponry dominates the NLB and to stop fantasizing about the simpler war gunslinging past
http://www.combatreform.com/highexplosives.htm
and to fully light mechanize our infantry with high-technology M113 Gavins so we no longer fight the enemy M16 vs. AK47 (AKM) + RPG
http://www.combatreform.com/itmaneuversabattalion.htm
http://www.combatreform.com/popguns.htm
http://www.combatreform.com/lighttanks.htm
Next, we should supply EVERY Soldier with hand grenades that can also be shot from his folding stock, gas-piston, 7.62mm or 5.56mm modular (can shoot enemy's captured AKM ammo by switching out upper receiver, bolt and magazine well adapter) M16A5 assault rifle/carbine to enable us to blast dominate the close-range fight
http://www.combatreform.com/riflehandgrenades.htm
is create an "AmeriKanski" RPG launcher that is more accurate than the enemy ones so we can capture their rockets/boosters and use their own ammo against them. AmeriKanski RPG gunners should be organic to EACH rifle squad and qualify each year on them. Captured AKMs, RPKs, RPG launchers etc. should be attached to the outside of designated "Vulture" M113 Gavins to fire enemy ammo as its captured by the Vulture dismount squad to fire en masse remotely by the crew inside to bolster our firepower as we go, feeding off the enemy's mass-produced logistical supplies.

"...ignores having high explosives weapon shock action at the squad-level"
The problem is, the RPG is a shaped charge. It's an anti-tank rocket that can be used as anti-personnel. The US has high-explosive capability... 40mm grenade launchers, the replacement for rifle grenades, as meant for anti-personnel.
You're CORRECT though in that the US lacks long-range squad-based anti-tank rockets. But in asymmetric warfare, they're not fighting insurgent tanks.

@PhantomP63 We need HE rockets in every infantry squad to BUST ENEMY INFANTRY behind cover.

The Gustav really is a wonderful weapon, its a shame that us US Military only use disposables.

Mostly correct. Rangers use Carl Gustavs, marines Mk-153 SMAWs. We are working to change this in the current gunslinger KE mentality.

@dynmicpara the smaw is even getting phased out for the Jvelin, that thing is friggin nasty. you should see what it does to a 1985 cargo van full of an iraqi mortar team.

@breakerace6 SAY IT AIN'T SO. Can't the USMC do anything right? FYI, I fired the SMAW as a 2LT in the USMC. Why can't Javelins replace the marine man-slots that used to fire the awful Dragon ATGMs? Why must this be a zero sum manpower game when the USMC is so bloated with bodies on active duty? At $78K each the Javelin is unaffordible to take-out bad guys behind Afghan mud walls.
