APU (Auxilary Power Unit) turboshaft engine powering a highly modified golf cart through a hydrostatic transmission. Aprox 50 hp through the trans to the wheels. 5 hp engine is used for starting rather than 2 large truck batteries. The hydrostatic transmission allows for instant forward and reverse changes, without any shifting, and nearly unlimited torque. Top speed was gearing limited to about 35 MPH at the golf course because the ground is so rough. This was a test run and will be followed soon by some high speed runs on flat pavement. Turbine engine was bought off of Ebay for $500 and used cart chassis was $100.

  • So glad that we have freedom of speech. I proudly served so you could have that right to speek your mind.

  • hydrostatic clutches are great for fixed RPM machines. CVT transmission?

  • @toejamish

It's an APU engine that does run at a constant speed only, thus the reason why I had to use a hydrostatic. Auxilary Power Unit normally drives a generator that must run at constant governed RPM (in this case 4,400 rpm output). It's either on or off, there is no throttle. Turbines (especially single spool) are not meant for variable rpm operation.

  • how's the transmission holding up to the heat? brilliant method of getting the power to the ground by the way.

  • The transmission has lasted 2 years with constant abuse. The truth is that it probably gets more of a workout in the industrial mower it was designed for. Those are usually a lot heavier than a typical golf cart, with lots of starts and stops, grass and sand contamination. The passive trans cooler works very well, without a fan and the oil tank never gets too hot to touch.

  • that thing hauls so much ass love that spinning out, I bet this thing is so powerful it will do that on pavement, how long does the jet engine run b4 its time to refuel?

  • The engine can run for about 45 minutes to one hour on the ten gallon tank.

  • Why are people so damn stupid? Seriously, do some damn homework, and know what you're talking about before you open your mouth. By the way, for those of you calling it slow, WHO THE FUCK CARES! It's jet powered, how cool is that?
