Well when the American from the town wrote the name all the Americans around pronouced it just like you will pronounce Madina (the city of Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) whereas it is pronounce as medianah.
And I also remember someone asking Akeem Olajuwon whether Lagos is in South Africa.
