This is a tutorial on how to share files between Ubuntu and Windows using Samba in your local network.
Samba is available through your Synaptic package manager and it is very simple to use.

***As for any OS make sure your network is secure before you enable file sharing***

If you have any suggestions or questions please feel free to do so by leaving a comment.
Thank you!

  • works like a charm!

  • @simonwessel> Great! :)

  • Don't know if you can answer this, but I've done what you have pointed out here, but everytime I try to connect to the ubuntu share, i get a box to enter a user name and password.

I am assuming that I have some permission issues to work out, but i am not sure...

    Any Ideas...

  • When sharing the folder make sure you check "Guest Access" that's the only thing I can think of that could cause that. try it out and let me know if you need more help.

  • what about setting the workgroup name.

    how to do it?

  • At the Terminal type the command

    sudo gedit /etc/samba/smb.conf

Scroll Down and at the workgroup = workgroup, simply change the workgroup name and press enter

Restart Samba, at the terminal type

    sudo /etc/init.d/samba restart

    That's it.

  • @amzertech I appreciate the sentiment of wishing to help creative commons music, but for us older viewers, background music makes it more difficult to understand your instructions.
