  • i am now saving to get the 100-400L, i also only take aviation pictures, will i be disapionted, or should i save more for a different lens? i thought about getting the fixed 300mm f/2.8, but 1, its expensive, and 2, its fixed at 300. help me if you can, thx!

  • @supersabre69 The 100-400L is defnintely a good lens, very versatile and sharp for its focal range. The 300 and 400 primes are definitely sharper, but you loose the flexibility and they're much more expensive unless you go for the 300 f/4 which is about $200 cheaper than the 100-400L.

  • I was just thinking about picking up this lens. I pretty much only shoot airshows. Is there anything better in the same pricepoint? How fast is your 100-400...f4?? I take it you'll be at RedBull Airrace NYC in june, nice.

  • @Spayne007 Well, the "Bigma" otherwise known as the Sigma 50-500 is available for slightly less than the 100-400L. Obviously the 50-500 has a longer range, but generally speaking the 100-400L tends to be sharper. The 100-400L starts off at f/4.5 at 100mm and closes up to f/5.6 at 400mm so it isn't a particularly fast lens.

Indeed I will be at the NY Red Bull Air Races. Not sure where I'll be shooting from though.

  • how it will look with 2x extender? i think that double better!!!! Photos are really nice!

  • Horrible, you'll be limited to f/11 and at that aperture the camera won't focus, nor will you get enough light requiring you to bump up the ISO. Not to mention the artifacting you'll get and degradation of sharpness.

The 100-400 was originally designed to be usd with film bodies as the trombone zoom displaces so much air volume, it will introduce a lot of dust to your system. Dust that with a film system gets eliminated every time the fim advances. Digital sensors do not advance. I would recommend a 70-200 2.8L and a 2x teleconverter instead, as it is a closed system and internal focus that will allow a larger, faster range and larger aperture on the wide end.

  • thx kyuusei074. i think that has made my mind up, looking farward to getting it now!! cheers, oh and your pictures are awesome!! nice one!!

  • my brother was the loadmaster on the c-130 at this airshow, me and my dad went, the f-22 was an amazing jet
