We live our lives as Americans in a Roman style grid, an ancient symbol of military planning and efficiency. Visit an aboriginal village, the traditional village design is built upon the idea of community and public connection. The buildings are constructed around a series of open spaces or plazas that facilitate human interaction and a real sense of community. One of these American intersections used to exist in Portland until Communitecture intervened and re-defined the intersection. Now the ever commercializing intersection of Mill Ave. and University Dr. here in Tempe is being gifted the opportunity of a new face. Utilizing the local community and a serious longing for human connection, this urban crossing has the chance to become more than just an intersection.
