Why is it good for education quality?
Ask yourself, why would you want to listen to a third rate instructor when you can have inventors, doers, problem solvers, maybe a few PhDs give the lecture?
and yet... our students are leave schools unchallenged and often unthinking and unprepared. Is it because the lecturers were bad/poor quality?
Why are there so many problems in the world?
Our schools around the world are producing less than qualified thinkers and problem solvers...
Who to blame?
Teachers?
Students?
Parents?
Culture? (That's the number one cause IMHO)
Solution?
Easy...
Students and teachers publish their instruction and
their learning...
With transcriptions, education will be accessible to everyone... if only Youtube will make the transcription tools more Wiki like...
The rise of a meritocracy.
People will quickly see who are the best teachers and the best students.
Materialistic rationale (for individuals) to improve local education in the United States:
If you own property in the US you want to be located in good school districts, right? Why? Answer:Your home value goes up because people want to live in areas where their children have access to the best education...
But what if quality education was distributed throughout the world? Then we'd all enjoy the wealth that educated problem solvers bring to the (world) community...
How:
Screencasts are easy to make... and the software is free.
Computers are too expensive? In the US?
Linux Terminal Servers Thin clients for less than $50 each...
Why hasn't it happened yet?
Why don't teachers use more computers in the classroom? Maybe because a teacher that knows how to use a computer can find a higher paying less stressful job relatively easily?
So to sum up:
Teacher: how to use Youtube in your course work... as a lesson?
-teacher poses questions
-students respond
-teacher creates instruction
-students create instruction and evidence of problem solving which is then held up for review to all
(meritocracy should rule)
