Jefferson, as Founder of the Republican Party, speaks to a dinner meeting of the Southern Prince George County Maryland Republican Committee in Fort Washington, Maryland, and there begins his talk by calling for Prayer for Obama, the P.resident of the White House, the place where as President, Jefferson did a Bible Study that became known as the "Jefferson Bible", like a "Red Letter" New Testament, the words of Jesus and a few connecting verses for context.
So to sum it up...yes, technically Jefferson founded the Republican Party in name but he really founded what is today's Democratic Party...fyi. And mentioning he was nearly atheist is an fyi, too.

Jefferson is actually the founder of the Democratic Party. But the Democrats were originally called Republicans back then. Then they were called the Democratic-Republicans and eventually Republicans was dropped from the name. In a long twisted way, the Federalists picked up the Republican name after it became available and are now today's Republican's. Also, Jefferson was nearly atheist.
