Mountain Training and Misadventures.
Mr. Todd was only fifteen days past his eighteenth birthday when he enlisted in the 10th Mountain Division. He carried an early 35mm camera, an Argus C3, through two years of training in the Colorado Rockies and into battle in Northern Italy in the closing months of World War II. The color and black and white photographs document one boy's growth into a Mountain Man. Mr. Todd narrated his story to his grandson in 2006.
I just spent three days camping in the NE corner of Camp Hale. Lots of signs around the grounds describing life there. I went Jeeping and ATVing on roads cut by the Army, some to old 10th Mountain Division Huts that you can rent. They cut some intense roads that are more like stair cases straight up a mountain with extreme steeps and flat portions in between. One of the roads (McAllaster Gulch) climbs 1000 feet in 3/4 of a mile.
