The YS-101 is a single-digit clock constructed with a 16F84A PIC microcontroller. The example shown here is equipped with a Monsanto MAN-1 LED display, generally considered to be the world's first production seven-segment LED display.

Each segment of the MAN-1 is made up of two silicon wafers, which each contain four diode elements. With the inclusion of a decimal point, the entire display contains 57 separate diode dies, which is quite a lot compared to modern displays which typically only use a single diode for each segment. The MAN-1's first-generation diode technology results in a very dim display, but the LED's inherent ruggedness was a drastic improvement over the Nixie tubes, Minitrons and Panaplex displays it was designed to compete with.

  • The song is called 'clearia' by subatomicglue. Several of our other recently uploaded videos also use clips from different subatomicglue songs.

  • What is the music playing ? It sounds like some Commodore 64 music ;-)
