"The Cookers" playing at the 28th annual JazzTerrassa Festival in Terrassa (Barcelona) Spain on Saturday, March 14, 2009. The Cookers are a Hard Bop group composed on this tour of Billy Harper (tenor), David Weiss (trumpet), Eddie Henderson (trumpet), Craig Handy (alto), George Cables (piano), Cecil McBee (bass), and E.J. Strickland (drums). The name of the tune is "Man of Peace", a Cecil McBee composition. Please excuse the poor video and sound quality of the clip, I shot it with my cell phone and clearly the sound is muddy, but that is all I had available. Part 2 of this is a short clip of the continuation of this piece before my memory ran out. I'll upload the first number they played that night as soon as I can.

Comments Welcome

However, I have to say I don't understand why the comments end up out of order or don't post sometimes at all. If you reply to someone else's comment yours is supposed to go under theirs indented to the right a bit so it can be seen what it was a comment to. But most of the time it just gets posted up top like a totally new comment and no one can figure out WTF it was referring to. For me this is a glitch in the Youtube program that detracts from the purpose of comments.

  • Hi, it's me, "goodshiite" - I actually figured out how to connect the 78 rpm player, and created this account, to post my first jazz-related video - if you hadn't already heard this one, thought you might get a kick out of it :-) (Gave me something to do while I try to follow doctor's orders & "stay cool" (stay inside) to kick this cold!!)

GREAT TASTE, man! If and when I ever get around to posting some of my collection, will drop you a line - might create a different username for that (this account's just for "stupid stuff") - including three MONK 78s!! Awesome Awesome-ness!

    Keep rockin'!

  • (cont'd) So yeah, just LAST WEEK, I got a batch of 78s for $2 each, one's a VG- but still beautiful sounding copy of Moody's "Blue and Moody", and - WOW! - recognized it as the basis for the One Eddie Jefferson track I REALLY love, "Birdland Story"! TOO COOL, gonna have to post both back-to-back sometime.on youtube.

THANKS for the reccomendations - man I love iTunes (when I can't get vinyl), lets you buy single tracks you love for 99cents, will check em out!

  • Hey, I got the same "King Pleasure Sings / Annie Ross Sings" album! The one of them on the front like playing cards. CD, tho. Saw the LP *once* - it was TOTALLY BEAT UP. The VERY FIRST bebop record I *EVER* heard as a little kid, about 5, was when my granddad, who knew how much I loved records, took me to a neighbor's house. Those were the first 78s I ever saw, too! Music on them was SO GOOD! One was Pleasure's "Jumpin' w/ Symphony Sid", man I went Nuts! Got my own copy, FAVE still.

  • Actually that song by A.R. was called Twisted, and it was by Wardell Gray. She sang the sax parts. Betty Carter was also a great vocalese singer, & if you can get Oscar Brown Jr.'s album Sin and Soul it's great too altho not vocalese. It has Work Song and Dat Dere that Oscar wrote words for. It's a classic album too. Man where would we be without BlueNote? Most of the greatest musicians and music of the 50's and 60's. BN & Impulse, Prestige & a couple other labels have filled my life with joy.

  • Hey GS, thanks for the great feedback. I love jazz, especially hardbop, been listening since the mid-50s. I used to listen to Symphony Sid on WJZ in NYC, Lester wrote wrote the tune about him & then King P. made it a classic of vocalese. I also always dug Lambert, Hendricks & Ross, & the flip side of King P.s album on Prestige with Annie Ross doing Farmer's Market & My Analyst Told Me is some of the best vocalese ever done. I still have my orig. LP. (more)

  • PS, I like your username too - LOVE king pleasure - I know Clarence Beeks stole the idea from Eddie Jefferson and all, or so the story goes; and Eddie's alright and all; but Pleasure's my fave! Got a handful of his Prestige records in the 78 jukebox, love singin' along w/ Parkers Mood, will have to post vids of the juke someday...

  • WOW, you listed just about everyone in my jazz record collection - I'm a Blue Note FIEND - all FASCINATING! Neat, so Cables played w/ Dex... Dex is MY MAIN MAN. He's the one got me into Hard Bop when I was a kid & rented his Round Midnight movie from the library. WOW! 15 years later, collected every last one of his blue notes on vinyl, even got a early-50s vintage Conn 10M tenor like he used in the 60s & started lessons (never finished).

THANKS for all the info man, will check them out!

  • He formed a band with Craig Handy in 1990 with either Billy Hart or Jeff Watts, collaborated with Craig Handy on the music for the Bill Cosby show, has worked as an arranger for numerous famous musicians and was instrumental in helping Freddie Hubbard make his playing and recording comeback. He also is the organizing force for this group that you hear here. So all in all this is a top notch ensemble and if you can catch them playing anywhere you won't be disappointed.

  • Eddie Henderson started out getting trumpet lessons from Louis Armstrong & playing with Miles Davis at the age of 17, because both of these giants were friends of his parents. Although Eddie went on to get a medical degree and has worked as an MD he also has had an exemplary career as a musician, playing with Herbie Hancock for 3 years, John Handy, Tyrone Washington, Joe Henderson, Pharoah Sanders and Art Blakey. Finally, David Weiss is a founding member of the New Jazz Composers Octet in NYC.
