I've flown on a 2002 build 737-800 aircraft, and that had winglets fitted. At that time boeing never had winglets as an option and was going through a testing stage.

It was filmed in 2010, since then all pre 2007 orders have since them had them fitted. While others have been sold to other airlines in order to secure new orders. Ryanair have had 300 737-800 deliveries but currently only have 277 737-800 aircraft (the biggest current fleet size).
More deliveries are expected.
The winglets reduce fuel burn.
