This is a way to make a matching headband from your cover material. Then rounding the spine before lining and casing in.

  • Gilding edges is a complicated process that requires a lying press and an assortment of somewhat esoteric materials and tools. Armenian bole, steel scrapers, agate burnishers and cooked starch for starters. It also takes one day for each edge. If you need to gild an edge there are companies here in NY that will do single volumes for you, they set books up in presses and use Hot transfer gold foil. It isn't as rich looking as the antique method but it is cost and time effective.

  • I ja isto sam našao blago. Sve pohvale. Još samo da govori hrvatski.

  • I've actually found a treasure on YouTube ; O Thank you.

  • Wow, thanks a lot for your videos. I took a book making class but never learned how to make books with a rounded edge or how to make books so efficiently. Your videos are very instructive and easy to understand, thank you so much! yay.

  • Great. Can you make a video about how to gild edges?

  • Many thanks for putting together these videos. I am about to attempt my first project using these as my model. I was wondering if you would be able to expand on what you mean at the beginning of this video when you say that "all the books have been trimmed now." It seems that there might be a step between your "tipping on endpapers" video and this one? All best.

  • Hi Sage

Excellent video, thank you so much for taking the time to create these tutorials.

The hammer you use for rounding the spine, is it a specialist bookbinding one or will any hammer with a flat head be suitable?

    Best wishes

    Billie :)
