  • I'm still stuck with the Kerry style. Dang, sounds like you got the top end style nailed. I'm working on it. Did you start with the Kerry style (the technique using

the top for rolls)? If so, how long did it take you to

    get handle on it?

    You sound really good.

  • @Tahquitz hello tahquitz, did start kerry style, but i could never quite get the wrist action right. i am self tought as well, so i'm sure i would have been a better kerry player w/ proper instruction. when i started playing topend it just felt totally right, i can't really explain it. my wrists like it better as well(i have carpal tunnel syn.). i haven't played in a while, focusing on guitar. will pick up whistle and bodhran again soon! thank you for commenting on my post:)

  • nice job! what maker drum is that try these dudu dudu ddud dudu dudd uddu dud udu dud dud ddu ddu that will eventually work their way into the single ended triplet and roll keep it up! -kip
  • @Tahquitz There's nothing wrong with Kerry style!

I used to teach it many years ago then got into other percussion. When I came back to the bodhran , top end style had taken off. But to be honest, everything you can do with top end has been done, and it all sounds very samey to me. Go with Kerry style and find out how much you can do with your free hand on the back of the skin.

  • I'm just learning the top end style and appreciate your video and its inspiration (i don't encounter that many "folks" into Irish music). Where did you get your tippers? Consider putting up anothe bodhran vid.

  • @uilleannmarseille AAAARRRGGGG DOOOON"T PUT BEER ON THA SKIN!!!! lol the alcohol will dry it out. It's an O'Kane drum, so the skin has already been treated. And it's tunable, so he only has to loosen the tuning ring.

  • your skin is too dry !! are you living in hot country?? put a pint of Guinnes on your skin!! you are very funny and good technique!!

  • @ neilandfi: Thanks for the encouragement...I guess I've been overly influenced by the various bodhran solo videos wherein the players seem to be using top-end technique. The main thing is I go to a session bang along, try not to overplay and have fun and nobody complains.

    cheers

  • Thanks for getting back to me. It's obvious that we're all put together differently. Guitar is my main instrument and though I've been playing for 40yrs (yeah I'm an old guy) and even though I've tried many times I still can't alternate pick rapidly for more than a second or two (fast up and down strokes with a flat pick). My synapses, tendons, joints...whatever just won't let me do it. This might keep me from TE style we'll see. Guitar my fave. i play hybrid and finger-style mostly. Good luck

  • Nice, I would have dropped the stick already, lol.

  • How does one play triplets with this sort of chopstick tipper?
