My first go at tenor banjo. I recently found this old Slingerland on ebay and decided to give it a good home

  • I want one of those so bad. Where can I get one?

  • Keep an eye on ebay. I picked this one up for about £70, although it was a real wreck and needed quite a bit of work.

In good, playable condition I've seen them go for £300 - £500. They're a decent cheap alternative to Vegas...

  • Hello - I just purchased a 17 fret Slingerland Tenor just like yours, and am wondering what type and gage of strings you've found to work best for you. Can you help me out? Thanks!

  • Hi, I've really only tried out one type so far: Aquila nylguts. I realise this is unusual for tenor banjo but I just like the thick, plunky tone they give. I've had them on my 5 string banjos for a while now and I doubt I will ever go back to steel strings. For the tenor, I bought a classical guitar set as Aquila don't make anything specific to tenor banjo. I guess I wouldn't really recommend them if you play in a session context as they're unlikely to cut through fiddles/flute/boxes etc.

  • hi there can you tell if its possible to get tabs online so i can practise these great tunes,,,keep up the good work u r goooooood,

  • Thanks weepaull. For banjo tabs online I'd recommend the banjohangout. I play tunes from lots of different sources - many from books and some by ear from recordings. I got this particular version of Loch Lavan from a book of fiddle tunes. It's in music notation if that's any good to you. I can email it if you drop me a message with your email address. As you can see from the comments below, I've been asked by other people too...!
