Artist Julie Oakes discusses her work on exhibit at The Clay & Glass, April 10-June 26, 2011.
In Swounds, Oakes addresses the fragility, authenticity, and poignancy of life.
At the heart of the exhibition are more than 100 glass sparrows suspended from the Gallery's ceiling. Each day, one sparrow will fall and smash, adding to a pile of broken glass which will grow throughout the exhibition.
A second piece combines a painting of an ark and 50 pairs of hand-painted clay feet depicting various species. An additional five works complete Swounds, which explores with viewers the relationship between concepts of spirituality and the reality of earthly violence.
