It's a song about childhood and child minds. The song is based on the Alice trilogy, and a drawing made by Julian, John Lennon's son, about his girl crush, Lucy, in the Sky, with diamonds. This is obvious due to the reference of kallidoscopes, marmalade, and marshmeallow pies (a.k.a. Moon Pies). Childhood delights.

@mellowlanternquartet And to back that up, When John Lennon was a younger boy he loved Alice in Wonderland It makes perfect since that he'd put the colorful background of the book into a song, but some people wanna say it was about an LSD trip when all reality when he wrote this song he had been clean because of his new found interest in Hinduism
