reverb is a word derived from reverberation... reverberation is the sound of your guitar tone bouncing off of objects then bouncing back at you. bigger the room, more reverb...
older amps (50's and 60's) used spring reverbs that didn't actually simulate the room reverbs accurately but gave a cool tone... you hear that sort of reverb a lot on surf rock and rockabilly type stuff... more model pedals use digital circuitry to more accurately replicate those tones.
