After a week long hiatus thanks to postponements, the RSHL was back in business with an exciting match-up between "President Trophy" favorite Baby Seal Killers (as deemed by Weeze) and the re-tooled Mazer.

First off, a brief review of each team's key off-season roster movement. BSK bolstered their line up with a number of goalies and depth players to address last year's weakness. These acquisitions include starting goalie Cordeaux (Laggo), all around player Trick, the ever amusing Arcadian...and many others. Mazer on the other hand did not add many pieces but did pick up several new starters including perennial all star J-walking and signed 00superfreak00 away from BSK right before the end of pre-season.

The match started shortly after 10 pm but at this point BSK may have already been cursed as they were the LAST team to get all their players out on the ice for puck drop. The game started off without a bang as both teams did not wish to expose themselves and played tentatively to test each other out. After a few exchanges, Mazer's new star J-Walking decided it was time to take action and drove to the net registering the first shot of the game. This started what would be a deadly Mazer attack leading to a total of 4 shots before J-Walking, the one who started it all, finally slipped a shot between Cordeaux and the south post. Things were looking bleak for BSK as they were down 1-0 on goals and 5-0 on shot total. But their early offensive futility may have been a blessing in disguise as the Mazer back end started dozing off. Giving up the first goal woke BSK up as before Mazer could even enjoy their lead for a minute, Arcadian controlled the puck unchecked across the crease and laid it off to warbird Chrono for his team's first shot and an easy goal. The two goals in rapid succession momentarily made the fans believe that this will be a fast paced end to end game, alas the game quickly returned to the dreadful defensive duel. Both teams showed determined defense with BSK applying more pressure, but neither sides were able to break down the other and managed a measly 2 more shots combined before the period's end.

All the Mazer fans were despairing and planning to cry away their evening as it looked hopeless for their team. BSK had the two goal lead and the control of the game. From this point on, it was supposed to be an easy win and the first step to claiming RSHL supremacy. Somewhere along the line, people forgot to inform Smalls. Before the end of the first minute of the last period, in a span of just 10 seconds, Smalls scored back to back unassisted goals and tied the game thus reviving the Mazer home crowd. The two quick goals shocked BSK so much that their solid puck control play, which was winning them the game, was no where to be found. Minutes later, Smalls would go up against the BSK defense by himself again. This time he went around the defense and with one hand chipped an easy shot on net that somehow sailed by a shell-shocked Cordeaux. The crowd went wild with raining hats to celebrate the first hat-trick of the season! Cordeaux was clearly shaken after the two quick goals and giving up the lead only further tanked his confidence. His team tried hard to level the score but this only resulted in a back-breaking counter attack goal by Mazer veteran warbird Jalrix assisted by J-walking. A minute later Jalrix put the final nail in coffin with his second of the game curteosy of Mazer hero Smalls!

Final Score: 6-3 Mazer

Baby Seal Killer throughout the game seemed to lack chemistry as their defense and goalie were not on the same page and their forwards, although showed many flashes of individual skill, did not work together very well. Due to the lackluster teamwork, BSK simply could not break down the Mazer defense and did not generate enough scoring chances. Mazer on the other hand demonstrated great team chemistry and took advantage of the mental lapses by the BSK defense to win the game. They generated more shots and scoring opportunities even though BSK had the puck for most of the game. All in all, this was a game that started slowly but exploded in the latter half giving us a climatic conclusion.

Baby Seal Killer will match up against Creaser on Sunday in a battle of 0-1 teams, who will both be fighting hard to get their first win. Mazer on the other hand will be in action the same night as they look to continue their winning ways against w0 Memorial Cup champions (albeit with many personnel change) Interference.
