Given the family name and fortune, Gary Lewis could have very easily avoided the draft. But he didn't, and he went to Viet Nam. All discussions about his music aside, I tip my hat to him for that.

All of their songs were so good, all they needed to do was sing them! They were very talented and underrated. But the songs are still played all the time, and hold up so well..........

Did any other group have the double bass back then-when music was great!

That said, he was a very warm-hearted guy, and the band produced some wonderful songs. Going to sing a couple of his hits down at the Clipper in Olympia. Nobody ever sings them, and they deserve to be heard.

And no ... my bands never went anywhere. Maybe my voice sucked too.

Gary was talented. However, what you hear is not really him. On This Diamond Ring, for example, the lead vocal was actually Ron Hinklin and Gary was overdubbed. See wiki. Gary started a comeback tour in the early 70s. One of the first stops was a well-known rock tavern in Kent, Wa. called the Adlib. I was in a band that played there often. Sadly, almost no one showed up the first few nights. We talked often but I never had the heart to tell him his voice sucked. Watch later videos. Not good. :(

SONGS WERE SO SIMPLE THEN, PEOPLE COULD ACTUALLY SING AND PLAY REAL INSTRUMENTS. AMAZING HOW THINGS CHANGE AND PEOPLE JUST ACCEPT TALENTLESS PERFORMERS ,NEVER KNOWNG THAT THEY STINK.

This has to be the earliest double bass drum kit. Gary was ahead of his time.

I tend to like groups where the drummer is the lead singer such as these guys, Night Ranger or Genesis.
