Surely, if we have nothing and no-one in need of understanding and compassion, there would be none. I believe that God allows some people to go through such deformities and traumas to encourage these virtues in all Mankind. Unfortunately, Man's greed has raped and poisoned the planet: polluted air to breathe and water to drink, food to eat and in places none.
Unfortunately, it could be the cause of such birth defects.
