I just love the way that peoples' attitudes to, and comments on, this song just reveal the contents of their heads that they brought with them. Physician, heal thyself. I'm sure I remember a studio version on an early album, before 1974.

Still brilliant !

This is a white man singing about the behaviour of people like Ian Paisley, (he very nearly says Ian Paisley on the album but I notice it has been edited from the CD version).
"I hate the white man, and the man that turned him loose" (i.e. God).
And the line is "doctrinaire refuse" not 'abuse'.
You are exactly the sort of 'white man' this song is about.

A timeless concept!

I suppose it's a sign o a good song that
it can be misunderstood so well.Quite
plainly the issues here transcend race. The poetry becomes quite ornate in a sort of ornamental lash, so the meaning
may become obscured. A look at
european civilisation over thelast
three hundred years may throw some light
on the matter.

@234welovethehardcore Hey, thanks for the comment. I have not looked at the comments for a very long time but I remember that most of them were negative. Thanks again. I hope this guy tours small clubs sometime in the near future.
