  • Perhaps you've never heard of artistic license. Bette does a FABULOUS job on this song...just DIVINE!

  • Sometimes an artist can take a song...make it their own...and actually make it better suited for them. I feel that has been done here. Bette Midlers version of this awesome song has much feeling that seemed lacking in the Peter Gabriel version.

  • @TheDivineMisterD --- you don't need an artist's permission to change the lyrics to a song. You pay the royalties, and then you do it however you want it. So, who knows what Mr. Gabriel thinks and frankly who cares? The lyrics were fine as-is. Bette's a great schmaltzy singer and actor/comedian, but I think she should leave the art-rock to the art-rockers.

  • @coordinatezero Obviously Peter Gabriel liked it since he would have had to give permission to change the lyrics. At least Bette has an artistic vision, She loved the song, but saw something she thought would suit her better....

  • so much power, so much emotion. so simply divine. so breathtaking. phenomenal is an understatement trying to describe her performance. bette midler is truly an inspirational person.

  • Best performance of Bette ever! -3

  • this is my life

  • WHY oh WHY does she change the lyrics to the chorus?

    "Lord, here comes the flood

We'll say goodbye to flesh and blood

If again the seas are silent

    in any still alive

It'll be those who gave their island to survive

Drink up, dreamers, you're running dry."

Geez, Bette. If you didn't like the lyrics to the song, write a new one, damnit. Don't ruin Peter Gabriel's amazing lyrics.
