Australia lost David Boon before stumps on day two, then Geoff Marsh and nightwatchman Tim Zoehrer saw their team through to 1/97. Graham Dilley's successful LBW appeal against Zoehrer sparked a collapse, the home team losing 9/151 to be dismissed 208 in arrears of England's first innings total. Dilley's pace, occasional seam movement and steepling bounce, was the main architect of this collapse, the Kent speedster taking 5/68 from 25.4 dangerous overs. Gatting enforced the follow-on and Australia lost Boon, Jones and Border with just 92 on the board. But Marsh anchored a fightback, batting more than six hours and scoring 110 from 311 balls. He had some support from Greg Ritchie and Steve Waugh, but both surrendered their wickets with injudicious shots. Australia's 282 forced England to bat again to register 77 for victory, which they did with seven wickets in hand.
