@OrganPianoMusic It MUST be expressive!!! And it's expressive in the way it must be.. not too expressive. Of course he knows how to play! He's just Koopman, man!!!

@SecondAgeOfReason The point is that many people think that baroque music and especially Bach's music is totally emotionless. On the contrary, baroque music is very expressive and play Bach's music without any emotion has no sense, it's boring ! While when you play Bach's music with a minimum of expression, it is immediately beautiful. I'm harpsichordist a can say that the only thing we can reproach to Mr Koopman is to be too rough with harpsichords !

The point I was trying to get across is that baroque music isn't an emotionless style of music. I know baroque music uses different ornamentation than classical, but the ornaments Koopman uses in this video are very appropriate and not overdone. It's almost baffling that people can criticize a baroque performance for being too expressive. I see it all the time. It's like people just want to hear bland boring performances or something.

@Samoriah It is possible for music to be too "expressive". The quotations are the important part to notice. When playing baroque music, adding a lot of rubato for example will make it too "expressive".

Like someone said, the idea of "expressiveness" have foundation in the romantic and traditional sense. Baroque music do not exactly cater to romantic interpretations... some believe that the only way to interpret something "emotionally" is to interpret it romantically - which is false. There is a different type of emotion inherent in Baroque music, something that isn't characterized by exaggerated vibrato, rubato, volume changes, etc.
