I lived for awhile in Foster City, CA, a couple of miles from Marine World Africa USA before they moved. I used to run along the path next to the bay in the evening and sometimes the lions in the park would start roaring. It was truly amazing how the sound carried - scared the bejeezus out of me! I've heard the roar can be heard 4 miles away, when the male is calling his harem.
