This was the Instrument that made the Bird-SFX from Alfred Hitchcocks "The Birs" or "Die Vögel" :)
-
An informative look at the original all vacuum tube mixturtrautonium. It's a crying shame that this instrument isn't more widely known. A sound like no other, way ahead of it's time and a truly expressive and myterious instrument.
-
The Trautonium is a resistance controlled oscillator system - the later synthesizer is a voltage controlled oscillator system - and it would be easy to adjust the scaling by adding extra resistance controlled by a knob. You can also change the pitch by moving the pedals sideways or by changing the division on the subharmonic oscillators.
-
It looks as if you can change the scaling by adjusting the finger tabs left -right manually on the rack, and/or turning the dial placed down by the extreme end of the resistive wire.
Who produced this monstrosity of sound? It's fabulous!

@ORUPRANKSTAZ The sounds are samples played by Oskar Sala himself coming from the multimedia booth right next to the Mixturtrautonium. Cheers.

Thanks for posting the info to the real one...I didn't know it was on here. Crazy, when I was 15 and saw the movie 'The Birds' by Alfred Hitchcock' I thought to myself - those bird noises are synthesized and I thought maybe it was done by a Buchla or something...well, not quite. It was only just recently I found out that this instrument was a full-fledged synthesizer even though I've seen some B&W pictures of it in the past. Have you checked out the Hammond Novachord?

I know about the Novachord but didn't know there's one in Deutsches Museum. If you like EM instruments you could check my other videos (DM-München and WDR Studio-Köln). Also I have tons of pictures in my photoalbums in picasa - INSTRUMENTS AT DETAIL!
