If you hit an extra note within about a measure of any real note on the same line, you get a "mash poor". This counts as a poor on the rating screen and does take away from your life, but you don't break combo. These make it very hard to just smash all the keys for difficult sections, as you'll be giving away lots of health to mash poors.

is this a drumming game? why is the player's screen so small while the skinny asian lady gets a lot of room? and that "GREAT" indicator seemed rather obscuring....

because the screen is big, and the player sits at the right side. and the player eyes focuses on the top where the notes appear so its easier to sightread.
