He was doing his "Welcome to my Nightmare" show, and when he did "The Department of Youth" he asked "And who gave it to you?". From the end of the row I was in came the reply "Abba". "Abba?" he replied, with a look of disdain, turning around, and walking away.
At the Sydney Showground show in 1977, they opened the roller doors and we all ran like mad to secure a spot in front of the stage at the far end of the showring. Hush was the support act. There was a row of security men in front of the stage (all wearing red suits, with white shirts and black bow ties), but the stage was so high, you would have to pole vault to reach it.
The best part about this is the fact that from 15 stories up, no one would have really known it was him, so if he never told a soul about this, it probably would have remained his secret, but where's the fun in that? What a Rock Star.
If I recall correctly, he was staying at The Sebel Town House in Sydney in 1977. I saw him at the Sydney Showground on that tour. I remember the Security man announcing that there were 40,000 people in the audience.
Good story. Compared to ABBA, Alice is the Pope of Rocking On.
