It was Geert Hellings who first had the idea of transforming a regular 4x4x4 Master Cube / Rubik's Revenge into a 2x2x6 puzzle. By rounding off the four centres on opposite ends he was able to then add another fully functional layer to each. This was an ingenious idea though the "cubies" on his creation were rectangular. This does not affect the function of the puzzle though I personally prefer cubic cubies.
So, in the early part of this century I took his idea one stage further and made the puzzle you see in the video. Yes it's big, yes it's heavy but it does actually work. The quality is pretty poor though. I have used standard Rubik's Cube style stickers and my preferred colour scheme which I believe works better on cuboids. The last picture shows it beside my 2x2x7 cuboid before I tidied it up and restickered it in preparation for some new photos and the video.
With recent 3D printing technology the puzzle could be made better and smaller today. However I personally prefer the hands on approach to making puzzles.
The puzzle can change shape since it obeys the cuboid shape changing rule-
"A cuboid is capable of shape changing when ( two or more edge unit lengths are different and odd ) or ( two or more edge unit lengths are different and even ) excluding cuboids with a side of one."
In total I have made twelve fully functional cuboids. They are- 2x2x3 (micro), 2x2x4, 2x2x6, 2x2x7, 2x3x4, 3x3x4 (large), 3x3x4 (medium), 3x3x5, 3x4x4, 4x4x5, 4x4x6, 5x5x6.
