Current recommendations are that women should begin routine mammograms beginning at age 40. In addition, they should have an annual breast exam by their health care provider and do a breast self-exam monthly.
Women at high-risk—people with a known mutation that increases their risk—should begin annual screenings by age 30—but not before age 25. In addition, they should have an annual MRI as well as annual breast exams and do monthly breast self-exams.
Wake Forest Baptist Health radiologist Wendell S. Myers, MD, says that in most cases, breast cancer is asymptomatic, "With mammograms we're hoping to find breast cancer before it can be felt—a few millimeters in size. That's why getting regular mammograms—starting at age 40—is so important—because we really want to find cancer before it can be found in any other way."
Dr. Myers says that detecting breast cancer early is key to curing it, "Early breast cancer is curable in about 95 percent of cases. And obviously, if it goes longer before it is discovered, it's less likely to be curable."
