ohh forgot the pictures or carvings of the karanas is just animations it's nearly impossible to raise the leg straightened or stretched bak ways you have to have thighs of steel to hold it with the hands free of critical standing postures.

for the karanas it depends on the description coz the so many description for 1 karana.
1 karana pose = 2 poses (from what the man in tanjore temple said during the passage tour for the bharatas karanas.
so in your information your can hold the critical poses (in standing postures) i just know this coz i'm a bharatanatyam dancer too.
love the pose u've done and the way you presented the pose is magnificent.

ideally, the hands are not supposed to hold the feet while doing karanas. it's a bit harder, of course :-)
