Hear expert business advice from social networking guru Penny Power, Founder of Ecademy. In this business tv show, she talks about the kind of blog copy that gets views and compels people to comment:

"How do you be a good blogger? I think the best bloggers are the ones who are encouraging other people to share in the blog, that means they're encouraging people to comment on that blog, creating a discussion, that's when a 21st century communication is different to a 20th century communication when you read a newspaper you couldn't comment, when you read a blog you can comment and you can contribute so much to that person.
So if I was writing a blog usually I was thinking I've got some expertise around this subject but I would love to hear from other people who share some expertise with everyone else, that's winning by sharing, that's gathering information, that's creating a massive vibration inside the social network of something that's really interesting.
So lets look at the way that people will surf, I'll go to the blog page and one of the first things I'll do, I'll look for what blogs have got a lot of views where people have looked at them, I'll look at what blogs have got a lot of comments on them which shows that that's obviously creating some emotion with other people.
So when you're blogging you want to be making sure that 1) its interesting to people, 2) that its engaging people and encouraging people to comment and 3) you ultimately want people to think that's a great person, I'm going to look at their profile and when you look at your profile you'll get an alert form Ecademy saying so and so has just looked at your profile and then you can create a dialogue with that person or they might even write a testimonial about you. So write a blog that is sharing information, it's not an advert and its encouraging discussion.
So what would I say is a top blog on Ecademy and this is a very personal choice, people would say that, some people will enjoy reading large articles but for me a really successful blog is one that's really short, takes about a minute to read, encourages me to comment back and give some thoughts on the subject they're talking about and really shares a little bit of information that could have an impact on that business person and ultimately is giving me something, is giving me a skill, or a thought for the day that is going to make a difference to the way that I'm conducting my business or the people I'm connecting with."

  • Thanks, Penny, for the tips.

  • You really do have to encourage conversation. What's the point in a blog that doesn't? social networking covers so much of the personal stuff that blogging about your day is just a waste of time.

  • Yep James - SERIOUS = DULL - everyone likes excitement, enthusiasm and charisma.. pity I lack it in some vlogs :)

  • Cool video, I think any tips for blogging are really helpful, as it is so easy to run out of topics to blog about and end up having extremely boring blogs nobody wants to read...

  • Like the advice on top tips for writing a blog - there must be so many people out there, who could be doing so much better if they followed these tips.

  • For me interesting is the key word! So many people insist on being boring as soon as it comes time to talk about their business. My personal theory is that it is because they think they need to be serious...

    But serious = DULL usually!

  • I agree with Penny...I love the challenge of creating a blog that is creative and interesting and one that will cause debate and discussion. Good advice.

  • I love Penny's collaborative approach. Really refreshing. This is great advice.

  • I think penny power 3 points are a great guideline to help people with their Blogs.

One I think is really important is that even though you want to create an emotional connection with the readers of your blog you shouldn't be to negative or controversial with your topics. You may get high numbers of readers with juicy topics but they are unlikely to return to your blog, recommend your blog to friends or want to view your profile if you sound like a person they wouldn't want to associate with.
