As the world's largest retailer, Wal-Mart regularly offers a wide selection of Black Friday deals for anxious shoppers who survive the long lines on the day after Thanksgiving.  Starting at 5:00 a.m. on Friday, November 26, 2010, deep discounts on a variety of products are expected, including on high-end items like televisions, electronics, computers and more.

While planning ahead is a common strategy before heading out for Black Friday shopping, in the past, Wal-Mart has been quite controlling in terms of leaking their ad prior to the Sunday before Thanksgiving.  BlackFriday.info, among other sites, received a pre-emptive cease-and-decist letter from Wal-Mart attorneys threatening action should the site post the Black Friday flyer before its official release on Sunday, November 21, 2010.  Despite sending a similar warning to websites in recent years, Wal-Mart did in fact leak their sale ad to CNN almost a week before the official release date in 2009.

One thing is known for sure, the 2010 Wal-Mart sales will feature a wider variety of discounts as compared to previous years.  In October 2010, Wal-Mart CEO Bill Simon told investors that the company is "looking for improved results during the holidays," citing "the addition of items to its product mix."  Analysts believe that to mean Wal-Mart will add deep discounts on everyday gift items in addition to savings on televisions and electronics.

In 2009, the retailer offered a 50-inch Sanyo plasma television for $598, a Magnavox Blu-ray player for $78 and Tom Tom GPS units for $59.  Deals on toys, clothing, video games and other items were also available.

While Wal-Mart is among the top retailers for Black Friday sales, their holiday sales have not come without controversy.  In 2008, shoppers rushed the doors of a Long Island, New York, Wal-Mart store.  One employee was killed in the stampede and a female shopper suffered a miscarriage after being trapped in the mob.

To reduce tensions and increase safety for Black Friday shoppers, Wal-Mart now allows shoppers into the stores before sales begin, permitting them to line up in front of top items in an orderly fashion.  Additionally, Wal-Mart also offers a selection of pre-Black Friday deals and online specials for those who'd rather steer clear of the Black Friday madness.
