"Not only puts a smart spin on gay rights but also delivers some radio-worthy hip-hop." Variety

From March 10 - 15, 2009, the Belfry Theatre will present BASH'd: A Gay Rap Opera, written and performed by Chris Craddock and Nathan Cuckow with music by Aaron Macri. Directed by Ron Jenkins, BASH'd: A Gay Rap Opera was created in Edmonton and has lit up both Canada and New York City winning Outstanding Musical (NY Fringe), Sterling Award for Outstanding Production (Edmonton), and the Patron's Pick Award (Toronto Fringe). The reviews tell the story:

"Audiences should be impressed by the passion of its convictions...BASH'd shows its rage, its grief and its driven, heartfelt determination." New York Times

"Employing rap, a genre known for its homophobia, sizzling writer/performers Craddock and Cuckow explore young queer life, gay marriage and violence with jaw-dropping energy, imagination and utter ballsiness". Now Magazine

"When Chris Craddock and Nathan Cuckow-two white Canadians who look more like character actors than rappers-strut onto the stage in off-pink duds to a big, stomping beat and throw down multi-syllabic rhymes like hip-hop pros, it's not just their formidable mastery of the style that convinces, but the balls-out content. This alternately joyous and angry style fits the show's sweet, archetypal love story, which comes with a cautionary kick. With Aaron Macri's bright, deep beats and Ron Jenkins's relentless direction, BASH'd is, in all senses, a deeply moving shout-out." Village Voice

"A tightly-written, fully-integrated, and ferocious production! BASH'd is flipping the conventions of musical theatre and gay culture on their heads. Suffice to say the lyrics and performances are relentlessly thrilling, touching, and hilarious. The romance unfolds like a Shakespearean drama and the tragedy skewers like the finest of Euripides's offerings. If you don't believe that a "rap opera" can live up to these zealous compliments, you've got quite an enjoyable journey ahead of you." NYTheatre.com

  • This is only once tiny piece of the whole work. I saw the musical and it's very creative, and well written, and they can rap better than most mainstream rappers out today (Soldier Boy, L'il Wayne, etc.)

  • I saw this last week in Toronto and you would not believe how good this performance was. These two guys are by far 2 of the most talented performers I've ever seen. Loved it. LOVED IT! This video is ok but nothing is as good as seeing these amazing guys in person.

  • Saw it yesterday. AMAZING. Some of the best theatre I've seen, I think. So much passion and energy, and although this clip might not show it, really heartfelt emotion. I would see it again and again. Hilarious, tragic, moving and relevant. Nathan Cuckow and Chris Craddock are superb!

Where can I get the Cast Recording?

  • @UsirRaMaroon bitch get out

  • Saw it twice at the Roost, bought the OCR. Loved it.

  • Saw this last year, was so amazing, funny and touching. Wish I could see it again!!

  • I saw this both at the Fringe Festival and then in its run at the Zipper Theater. What an incredibly moving, funny, gorgeous piece of theatre. There wasn't a dry eye in the house following each performance I attended. Such talented guys. Can't wait to see what they create next.

  • Awesome!!!

  • Nothing special.
