This is a demonstration of the basic moves used in point pressing Super Mario 3 for NES, under Twin Galaxies Tournament Settings (TGTS). The rules are a bit complicated and ambiguous, but I hope to clear up some of the confusion here.

I can vouch for all of the strategies used in this video, having successfully submitted a run under these rules. That run stands as the current world record at over 4 million points!

  • Tom, I notice you kill some enemies more than 2 times. Wouldn't this be grounds for a DQ under TGTS, just wondering?

    Nice video otherwise.

  • @NightmareJames In SMB1 maybe, but not in this game. The rules say nothing about killing the same enemy X number of times, they just forbid the number "attempts" in "locations where you can leech". As I mentioned in the video, the ref's allow extra "single-stomps" that are obviously not part of a bounce combo, since they are not profitable. They're only worth 100 points and you waste more than that by doing them, due to the wasted clock (50 points/timer unit).

  • Very, very smart Tom. You're one of the few people who really "gets" point pressing like I do.

  • @andrewg1990 And thanks. It means a lot coming from you that i got it right! :)

  • Awesome Tom! As usual, you are rocking things. Good to see you have upgraded your video quality... do you mind if I ask what you are using? You did suffer some sound desync as each level wore on, but the vastly improved video was a treat.

  • @brisulph Thanks. This was done using Pinnacle Studio 12. I've had it for a long time, but i'm still working the kinks out of it, as you noticed. :) In particular, it doesn't capture VCR recordings well at all, so it was useless for all of my WR footage.

  • Wow... you are a machine!

  • Wow... Holy crap... I am subscribing.

  • @rdrunner0077 Thanks for the clarification Tom.

  • @andrewg1990 Yup, I know that it's difficult, yet possible to do 1-4. I just prefer not to go thru the trouble. Maybe someday when I need an extra 20k or so, I'll work on it, but until then, I think I'll just get my P-Wing and move on. :) Anyway, thanks for posting your video of 1-4! It was nice to see what the solution looks like. :)
