From the early days of comic books in the 1930's comics sold for 10cents. It stayed that way for 30 years. In 1962 the price rose to 12cents, not from inflation, but from marketing. After 1964 with coins no longer being minted with silver, the prices gradually started to rise.

From 1968 to 1988, the average cost of comics rose only 63 cents, from 12 cents to 75 cents.(a six fold increase over 20 years, a .03% average per year).
(remember, in 1971 President Nixon removed gold from backing the dollar)

From 1988 to 2008, the average cost rose $2.24, from 75 cents to $2.99.( a 0.11% yearly average increase) in 2009 Marvel Comics raised its price on its top comics from $2.99 to $3.99

  • nice work on the research. I haven't heard of anyone using comic books before to demonstrate inflation, so well done if it was original research. This type of original research really sets content above others that merely parrot the work of others.

I find it irrating that people just accept that price inflation is natural and how things have always worked.

On an unrelated note, since incorporating them into a video, I bet your wife can no longer make fun of your comic book collection! ;)

  • @aletoledo1

I had given them to my son years ago. Not really a collection, only saved.

  • @1beinki I guess you know that ACTION COMICS #1 has a Big value right? .. more than 1.000 dollars for sure

  • That's pretty brilliant actually! I grew up in the 80's and I remember thinking back then, "man these are getting more and more expensive all the time!"

  • tell me thats not the real deal original superman

  • Nicely done. I don't see how a kid (or his parents) can shell out the money for one, let alone multiple titles, per month.
