ANCHOR:
A volcano in central Japan erupted today spewing out hot rocks and ash. Authorities say there was no major damage in the sparsely populated area around Mount Asama.
STORY:
Pictures show white smoke coming out of the 2,500 meter volcano.
Officials say that at the time of the eruption at around two this morning smoke shot up as high as two kilometers into the air.
But as yet there are no signs of lava on the sides of the mountain.
Increasing seismic activity on Sunday the first alerted the agency which raised its warning level.
Warning levels around the mountain will be kept at three out of five. This warns people not to approach the volcano.
Residents in cities and villages nearby have been told to look out for flying rocks and ash.
No one lives within four kilometers of the mountain, but workers in the area have been asked to leave.
Ash has drifted as far as Tokyo, about 140 kilometers to the southeast, but is not causing concern at this stage.
Mount Asama is one of Japan's more active volcanoes. It had its biggest eruption in 1783 that caused widespread damage, killing around 1,500 people.
