JALANAN - A Musical Documentary (Teaser)

This is a teaser clip (not yet the final trailer) for JALANAN ('Streetside') an upcoming musical documentary set in Jakarta, Indonesia. JALANAN explores modern-day Jakarta at street level through the lives and distinctive subculture of the city's gifted bus musicians. The film is an intimate portrayal of the buskers and their individual struggles and aspirations, and also a raw, humorous, often shocking portrait of Indonesia's bustling capital city.

UPDATE, Nov 2008:

The Indonesian documentary film project, Jalanan, which tells the story of three street musicians in Jakarta, has been awarded a co-production deal with renowned American

broadcaster PBS (Public Television Service) through its documentary commissioning unit, ITVS (Independent Television Service).

The project was one of just seven selected worldwide for co-production after a four-round competition from a field of hundreds of documentary projects from over 80 countries.

It is the first ever Indonesian production to be selected by ITVS as part of its annual International Call.

In announcing its selection of Jalanan, ITVS said the documentary unveiled a vibrant subculture in Jakarta through music, humor and three wonderful characters, and called the project an innovative look at a huge urban melting pot through the fringes of society.

wow Dan, what i saw in the 3 minutes 20 seconds was really perfectly done. Pas banget, nggak lebih, nggak kurang. Not tried to romanticize their lives, nor it was judgemental. So neat. SO LOOKING forward to seeing the whole thing -- in a street near me? like in my kampung gitu?
