I heard a beautiful a cappella version of this on OldAndNewSongs, T. Louisa''s channel the other day and it reminded me how I used to love the song. It is another of those Love-gone-bad songs involving what I think the French named, a Crime of Passion.
Apart from Louisa and now myself, many others have covered this traditional American Song, notably the popular Country singers, Johnny Cash, The Carter Family and others such as Joan Baez, Pete Seeger and Olivia Newton-John
Wikipedia tells us that this is a 19th century murder ballad and was first recorded in 1927 by Red Patterson's Piedmont Log Rollers. Hell they could name a band in those days!
My version does, to be expected on this channel, include different words and possibly a different tune but this may be due to the fact that I could never sit and listen when it came on the radio but had to belt out what I thought the tune and words were over the top of the performer. Dont they call it Karaoke these days?
Perhaps this could be my sequel to Careless Love, if you catch m drift!
I was pleased to give two memories of our Canada visit another showing both in the river video during the song and on the record sleeve at the end. I cant remember the river we had our very tame white-water adventure on but it wasn't the Ohio.
