The Welk arrangers were always inventive as evidenced here with Romberg's Donkey Serenade, a light opera favorite set to pop dance music. Welk's "boys" were so versatile. The reed section doubling with clarinets, flutes and piccalo. Notice the trumpeters doubling with trombone except Thow who often pulled out his bass trumpet. Still a relatively small orchestra in '57 but because of the brilliant orchestrations they always sound bold and big with plenty of bottom. Welk liked the classics.
