My maternal uncle, Sri Cherla Janardhanaswamy (Bulli yayya), tells the story of the Dandi March (narrated in Telugu). See also "Outcome of Dandi March", as a conclusion to this video. In the background is my brother, Prof. Krishna Vedula, UMass-Lowell. The motivation for this video is my sister, Prof. Radhika Gajjala, Bowling Green State Univ. She called us to remind us about the anniversary of the completion of the Dandi March or the beginning of the Salt Satyagraha.

  • Thank you for this translation! I am sad to report that my uncle passed away a couple of months ago.

  • By next day, it sent shockwaves throughout India's British Government. It became an inspirational movement-an awakening to the rest of the Indians.

They marched to their respective beaches. In Andhra too...Madras being the commong presidency for Karnataka, Andhra and Tamil nadu also had seen the march to local beaches. Visakhpatnam, Chirala.

The narrator Bulliyayya-was three yrs old.

Brianjogr: Thanks for making the video and sharing it.

Common man cannot afford to pay that high cost for a commodity that is used daily. From Sabarmati ashram, the 61 Yr old Gandhi, started marching to Dandi with 78 followers on Mar12 1930.

Covering the distance of 240 miles in 23 days. They reached Dandi on 5th April 1930 and made salt and decided not to pay tax on it. Police lathicharged them, and jailed Gandhiji. Sarojini Naidu who was leading women until then, lead the whole team later.

Instead of making those ships return to India empty to avoid losses, they were loaded with lower grade salt and was costing more than the finer quality salt already available in India. British taxed the Indian-salt so that it costs more than the salt coming in ships from Britian. Being a Vysya himself, with a business acumen, Gandhiji observed this...It is being made by Indians, in India, in Indian waters.

  • Here is a gist of what he is saying...

Ahismsa [Non-violent] based satya[truthful]-agraham[anger] is the greatest gift that Gandhiji has given.

Gandhij an embodiment of castes of India: Brahmin known for his knowledge, ksahtrya's-courage, a Vysa's acumen in Business and a kshudra's hardworking nature.

British exported cotton and other raw materials from India to England on their ships.
