One of the reasons for the invention of quantum mechanics was the failure of classical electromagnetism and classical mechanics to create a reasonable model of the atom. This lecture starts with the origin of Maxwell's Equations and proceeds to show the failure of a classical "orbital" treatment to handle atomic structure. The lecture ends with a brief discussion of spectra and hints of what's to come in QM.
