What did it cost to rent a bike there? Did you have to get an Euroopean license before going, to drive there?

You can get an International Driver's Permit (IDP) in the States easily, AAA, National Auto Club, etc., see Google. It was around $270 to rent plus mileage, came out to ~$500ish if you don't count the $300 cost to transport the bike from the rental's home city of Milan.
